Tech-Savvy REALTORS® Use RSS Feeds for Instant Info
by Rachel Shepherd
As hard as it is to believe, the web just got better. A new format for syndicating news called RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feeds are what some are calling the “new wave of search,” and they are becoming more useful and cost-efficient to the real estate industry.
To simplify how RSS feeds are used, imagine “Googling” a favorite topic of interest such as “appraising homes.” When you search for this topic, hundreds of news stories will appear. How do you choose what is most relevant and up-to-date?
With RSS, you don’t have to. This program is free of charge and all you have to do is follow a few simple steps: download and install an RSS program (such as NewsGator or FeedDemon) then go to your favorite sites and subscribe to their RSS Feeds. That’s it. The latest content and headlines will automatically go to your RSS program for viewing at your convenience.
An RSS feed can be useful to the REALTOR® in a number of ways. It can retrieve information about regulations, business production, the housing market and current events as soon as the news becomes available.
More importantly, REALTORS® can refer potential buyers to subscribe to the feed and view up-to-date information. Here’s how it works. The REALTOR® creates the feed of homes for sale in a specific area by using text editing software such as TextPad and then transfers the feed to a host server. This information is transported and sent to all the users who have subscribed to that feed.
REALTORS® should be familiar with the next and most important step in the process, promoting the feed. It can be promoted on the realty company web site or sent to numerous RSS feed directories. And don’t forget to tell customers about the availability of RSS feeds.
Finally, update the feed as needed. Some update daily or weekly depending on the new properties made available and/or changes to the current properties. This gives the consumer up-to-date, accurate information which they have subscribed. Remember, subscription is free and has a 100-percent delivery rate!
This new technology will enable REALTORS® to rely less on the standard methods of promoting properties such as print advertising. This is also a great way to continue a viral marketing effort, as referrals will generate more business to this service.
The future of RSS feeds is bright. Computer desktops will not be the only method of incorporating feeds; information can now be sent to cell phones to alert folks of the latest information on their subscription. This instant, mobile service will be of great use to REALTORS® in an ever-changing and fast-paced market.
