How to Respond to a Call-to-Action
  • DO: Thoroughly review all material provided with the Call-to-Action and review any pertinent information which has been previously provided by PAR.
  • DO: Act IMMEDIATELY on the request! Click on the PAR Action Center link as provided in the Call-to-Action email and send a letter to your legislator.
  • DO: Carry only PAR’s position on the legislation.
  • DO: Be alert to the bill’s printer’s number. Sometimes a bill may be amended and cause PAR to alter its position regarding the legislation. This can be particularly true toward the end of a session when a great deal of legislation moves rapidly through the General Assembly.
  • DO: Personalize the situation. Relate it to your own real estate practice and how you conduct business in the community. Your request will have far more meaning if it can be explained in terms of its effect on the legislators’ district and constituents.
  • DO: Provide the PAR Government Affairs staff with your legislator’s response. This is a tremendous help in determining how a particular issue may be considered before it comes up for a vote.
  • DON’T: Tell your legislator that the Pennsylvania Association of REALTORS® asked you to contact them. They should understand that you are making the contact as a concerned constituent as well as a REALTOR®.
  • DON’T: Offer to compromise or change language in a bill, even when directly asked to do so by a legislator. (However, as a follow-up, DO notify PAR Government Affairs staff of the request.)
  • DON’T: Insist that the legislator take a position. Ask for support of your position but don’t seek to force a commitment if they are reluctant to do so. When the issue is voted on, your request will be remembered.
  • DON’T: Give up trying to make contact just because your legislator is not readily available. These busy people are often hard to reach by telephone. When in Harrisburg, they are often on the floor or attending committee meetings. In case you cannot reach your legislator personally, leave the appropriate information, i.e. the bill number, printer’s number, and position, with the legislator’s staff.
