For a new homeowner, obtaining property insurance is a critical but often overlooked aspect of the transaction. Various changes within the insurance industry have made it more difficult for buyers to obtain insurance for certain types of properties or for properties in certain areas, and even the past behavior of the buyer is sometimes taken into account when determining whether to write a policy or what rate will be offered. Practitioners can use the resources listed below to help stay informed on these important issues.

NAR Resources 

Includes articles, website links, studies, and other information to help REALTORS®, homeowners, and others understand and weather the developing insurance availability crisis.
NAR leadership has created an Insurance Task Force comprised of REALTORS® representing all specialties. The Task Force is charged with assessing the state of affairs, exploring solutions and developing an appropriate role for NAR to help its state associations address what is now a very predictable, cyclical availability/affordability problem.
 
NAR Consumer Guide to Insurance Hurdles in Real Estate Transactions -- NOTE: Requires realtor.org password 
“The New Reality of Property Insurance: What You Should Know” is a free, downloadable guide for consumers on how current insurance market conditions may impact their real estate transaction. The guide can be downloaded either as a fully integrated .pdf file or as a Word document which you can customize for your company.
